To faithfully visualise the pictures on-screen, it is necessary to create an ICC profile of your monitor. A truly faithful calibration is only obtainable using specialised devices which work on an input/output basis (colorimeters / spectrophotometers). These pages can act as a useful simplified aid to set your monitor’s white and black points levels and to verify how much tonality your system can visualise. Contrast range and chromatic dominances need to be managed with the tools mentioned above.
In the below picture the softer the variation in tone, the more the tone you see. In observing the test, pixilation (reduced depth of colour), stripes, dominant chromatics and noise in the darker areas (monitor and / or low quality video card) should not be visible. In the following two pages, using the test, you should regulate the luminosity and, if available, the contrast of your monitor to obtain the best balance that allows you to distinguish the whitest whites (value 255) and the blackest blacks (value 0).
